Again this year, Nova Siri Genetics (NSG), a company that carries out research and experimentation of new strawberry and berries varieties, participated in the Berry Fruit Congress in Huelva, on 20th and 21st June..
“We have decided to confirm our participation for the third consecutive year in this important sector event, as we believe it is strategic for our business” - says Alida Stigliano, marketing and communication manager of NSG - The authoritative conferences in the programme have in fact allowed us to understand and deepen our knowledge of the current dynamics and future prospects of the strawberry industry not only in Spain, but also internationally. Furthermore, we had the opportunity to exchange views with the main players of the entire supply chain, which is crucial for a research company like ours”.
Nova Siri Genetics has been available in Spain with its strawberry cultivars for several years now, where it has managed to achieve satisfactory results in terms of presence and appreciation of its varieties. One of the most popular strawberry cultivars of this breeding programme in the region of Huelva is NSG 203 - Marimbella®, appreciated for its earliness, productivity and beauty of the fruits. It is joined by NSG 207 - Gioelita® and NSG 465 - Rossetta®, which stands out for its aroma and flavour.
“The strawberry sector - explains Nicola Tufaro, NSG breeder - is going through a period of profound change, both from a climatic point of view and with regard to new European regulations related to sustainability. Research must, therefore, offer innovative and advantageous solutions to meet the needs of the production world and the end market. NSG's genetic improvement programme is aimed at identifying strawberry varieties with optimal characteristics, focusing on plant rusticity, earliness and fruit quality. The aim is to enable growers to extend their production calendar and stay on the market for longer and longer periods of time in order to retain customers and consumers.
Our research work is continuous; in fact, we are working to complete our variety offer, so that we can reach out not only to producers in the Mediterranean areas, but also to those in Northern Europe. In addition, we also have the goal of launching new raspberry and blackberry cultivars soon”.
The breeding company has undertaken a process of internationalisation, with the purpose of introducing its current strawberry varieties also in the remaining world production areas with a Mediterranean climate, such as Maghreb, South America, South Africa and Australia.
