Nova Siri Genetics (NSG) has concluded its participation at Macfrut, held in Rimini from 21 to 23 April, confirming the Italian breeding company’s status as an international leader in varietal innovation for strawberries and berries.
For the second consecutive year, NSG was present at the Berry Area, a highly specialised event that facilitated direct dialogue with the sector’s leading operators. “The event – explains Nicola Tufaro, breeder of the company – allowed us not only to present the company’s genetic improvement programme, but also to explore, through meetings, debates and themed events, the main challenges and evolving dynamics of the sector at a global level, with the vision focused on innovation and sustainability that distinguishes us.”

The strawberry varieties included in NSG’s breeding programme are widely spread throughout the Mediterranean basin, a region which this year once again confirms its central role in strawberry production during the winter and spring months. The Italian breeding company’s research focuses on developing more resilient and high-performing cultivars, capable of adapting to variable climatic and soil conditions and with greater tolerance to major plant diseases.
“The new NSG strawberry varieties – continues Tufaro – ensure greater stability and continuity of production, whilst reducing the use of chemical inputs and improving the sustainability of cultivation. These characteristics help bridge the gap between supply and demand for strawberries observed in the early months of the year in the Mediterranean basin. An imbalance that affects the continuity of supply and the competitiveness of the entire industry.”

Furthermore, the focus of the breeding work remains on the organoleptic quality and shelf life of the fruit, factors that are becoming increasingly crucial for the market.

Among the new varieties presented at the fair, the new cultivar NSG 48 – Elyson® aroused particular interest; it is intended for the super-premium segment, thanks to its excellent agronomic and organoleptic characteristics. A strawberry that stands out for its uniform bright red colour and persistent sweetness and aroma, together with the plant’s high vigour and high productivity.

The variety has already received positive feedback both in field trials and in commercial evaluations conducted in Italy’s leading fruit and vegetable markets.
Furthermore, Rossetta® strawberry (a brand associated with NSG 465 variety) took centre stage at the happy hour held at the Berry Bar, where guests were able to taste themed cocktails that highlighted the distinctive characteristics of the product, all within an informal setting ideal for networking and socialising.
